AMC Travel (Amica Travel Lao Sole Co., Ltd) has officially launched NewPay payment services, enabling travelers at Vientiane Wattay International Airport to conveniently pay for flight tickets, hotel bookings, and various document processing without carrying cash. Consumers can now complete payments simply by scanning the NewPay QR code using WeChat.

Located within Wattay International Airport in Sikhot District, Vientiane, AMC Travel serves a large volume of domestic and international travelers. As Laos’ busiest airport and a major international gateway since its opening in 1999, Wattay International Airport has seen a substantial increase in visitors. According to Travel & Tourism World, Laos welcomed 2.6 million foreign tourists from January to August 2024, a 19% increase compared with the same period last year, with China, Thailand, and Vietnam being the primary source countries. Chinese tourists remain a key driver of consumption at the airport.

Despite high traffic, many airport merchants had not previously supported RMB payment, creating inconvenience for Chinese travelers and causing merchants to miss potential sales. SSK, a supermarket within the airport, became the first merchant to integrate NewPay WeChat Pay, simplifying shopping for Chinese travelers. Following its lead, AMC Travel is the second airport merchant to adopt NewPay, providing convenience for tourists who may not carry sufficient cash or hold a local bank account.

According to NewPay transaction data, since launching on November 29, 2024, AMC Travel’s transaction volume has exceeded 20 million LAK in less than a week. The AMC Travel team noted that with NewPay’s RMB payment function, Chinese travelers can pay directly in RMB at favorable exchange rates. NewPay’s backend automatically settles in USD or LAK according to the merchant agreement. AMC Travel chose NewPay not only for its status as the exclusive non-bank WeChat Pay acquiring institution authorized by the Bank of Laos but also to provide more convenient, traveler-friendly payment solutions.
