NewPay, Laos’ leading fintech joint venture and a nationally authorized compliant payment platform, has officially launched its aggregated QR code for WeChat and Alipay+, marking a milestone as the first go-live Alipay+ service in Laos.
NewPay supports multiple mainstream payment tools, including Visa, UnionPay, Alipay, and WeChat, allowing users to recharge accounts or make QR code payments seamlessly across different currencies, with lower transaction fees. By providing a unified payment solution, NewPay not only enhances user convenience but also expands merchant payment channels. To date, NewPay has served over 20,000 merchants and 1 million consumers.
In October 2024, NewPay received official approval from the Bank of Laos and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to become the official acquiring institution for Alipay+ in Laos, alongside an updated payment license. Following more than two months of close collaboration with the Alipay team, the Alipay+ merchant acquiring service is now live, officially establishing NewPay as the first Alipay+ go-live partner in Laos.
Dual QR Code Stand for Seamless Payments
According to the Bank of Laos Payment Tool Notice No. 05, unauthorized foreign payment tools (e.g., WeChat or Alipay personal QR codes) are strictly prohibited for commercial use within Laos. As an authorized national-level compliant platform, NewPay’s launch of Alipay+ merchant acquiring addresses the pressing payment needs of local merchants.
Previously, many merchants in Laos expressed difficulties: “During the 2024 Laos Tourism Year, our stores welcomed many foreign visitors, especially from China, but we could only accept cash or local bank apps. Limited payment options often led to lost customers.”
To comprehensively meet merchant needs, NewPay introduced a custom dual QR code stand, combining functionality with aesthetic design. Merchants joining NewPay can continue to accept payments via LAPNet (Laos National Payment Network) while also allowing consumers to pay directly using WeChat or Alipay.
With this launch, NewPay strengthens its position as Laos’ leading unified mobile payment platform, enhancing cross-border payment convenience and helping merchants capture more international customers.
Following the successful launch of Alipay China merchant acquiring, NewPay is set to gradually integrate additional payment channels within the Alipay+ ecosystem later this month. These will include:
Alipay HK (Hong Kong)
MPay (Macau)
NAVER Pay / Toss Pay (South Korea)
OCBC Digital / Changi Pay (Singapore)
HiPay (Mongolia)
Consumers visiting NewPay-partnered merchants will be able to scan a single NewPay QR code using any of these payment apps to complete transactions. Each payment tool’s limit is designed to accommodate daily business operations efficiently.
By joining NewPay, Laotian merchants not only overcome the barriers of foreign payment tools such as WeChat and Alipay, but also gain access to a diverse, global Alipay+ ecosystem. This allows merchants to attract international customers who can pay conveniently using familiar digital wallets.
Looking ahead, NewPay plans to progressively integrate all 26 payment channels within the Alipay / Alipay+ ecosystem, creating a more convenient payment system and a wider variety of payment scenarios. New payment channels will continue to go live each month, broadening merchants’ acquiring options and enhancing their ability to serve global consumers.
This expansion underscores NewPay’s commitment to connecting Laos to global digital payment networks while empowering local merchants with modern, versatile payment solutions.
